Year 5

Summer 1

Welcome back! We hope your Easter holidays were filled with joy, laughter, and cherished moments with your loved ones.

As we dive into the new term, we're excited to embark on an exploration of a BIG question: 'What is the circle of life?' This intriguing inquiry will weave together our RHE and Science topics, fostering a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our world.

Adding to the excitement, our class text for this term is Philip Pullman’s gripping tale, 'Clockwork' or 'All Wound Up'. Already, it's sending shivers down our spines, igniting curiosity and sparking discussions that promise to be both captivating and thought-provoking.

We can't wait to delve into these rich topics as we resume our journey together filled with enthusiasm and dedication.

Spring 2

Happy Easter to all!

Year 5 performed the Easter Liturgy beautifully today.  All children worked hard to learn their lines, the songs and any roles they played.  We were most impressed with how well the children worked together.  We wish you a blessed Easter and look forward to seeing you at the start of Summer Term.

Oracy 

Children in Year 5 continue to work on their oracy skills.  They have been talking a lot in their lessons - sharing their ideas, thoughts and knowledge.  In Maths, children have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes; they have had to use their properties to describe what the shape is as well as if it has been reflected or translated.  In RE, children were discussing Jesus' actions and Judas' choices on Maundy Thursday.  The children gave thoughtful advice of what Judas should have done or could have done to make amends for his betrayal.  Please have a look at the photographs in the gallery!

The Tower of London School Trip

Children in both classes were incredibly well-behaved on both the bus and tube on our journeys to the Tower of London and back again on Friday 15th March.  It was a successful trip with children showing their knowledge of Sir Walter Raleigh and their understanding of the importance of the Tower regarding our History topic - Crime and Punishment.  It was great to see their excitement when they realised they were walking in the footsteps of our main character from My Friend Walter, as well as the relief that our system of consequences has greatly changed.  Please check out the gallery for photos!

Class Assemblies 

Children in both classes have performed wonderful assemblies over the past two weeks about Saints who they have learnt about this term.  Well done for learning the lyrics and lines and speaking so clearly.  Make sure to check out their photos in the gallery!  

Spring 1

Persuasive Arguments and Peacemakers

Year 5 were given the task to write an argument about who they think is the most inspirational peacemaker living (or who lived) God's ways.  The children were asked to use their persuasive language learnt in their writing lessons and then perform their piece as a speech to the class, focussing on their oracy skills.  Both teachers were impressed with the children's performances.  They were sincere, persuasive and confident.  Check out the Gallery to see pictures!

Happy New Year to Year 5!

The children in both classes have had a tremendous week.  Thinking about new beginnings, goals to achieve and ways to build new and better habits has helped 5Y and 5D have a fantastic fresh start to the new year.

So, as we begin 2024, we also begin new topics in our learning journey for year 5:  in English we will explore persuasive writing influenced by our class text, Alex Rider, Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz; in Maths we will be working in fractions converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, as well as fractions to decimals and percentages; we will be computational thinkers as we delve into spreadsheets in Computing and our BIG QUESTION in Science is 'Is it too late to change?'.  

For this half-term we will be learning about Community and focussing on the core principle of Solidarity and Peace.  The children have enthusiastically embraced this look at God's Peacemakers.

Autumn 2

Trees for Cities

Year 5 took part in planting trees in our school playground and in Marnham Field, just down the road.   It was a rewarding time for all and such a delight to see the classes come together to make a positive difference in the world by:   creating a home for living creatures; more oxygen for humans to breathe; shade needed for hot weather and roots to soak up any flooding due to extreme weather.  It was a great time and made so special to be able to help fulfil God's mission to love, be loved and make the world a better place.

Children In Need

Year 5 recently united for a heartwarming Children in Need celebration, donning colourful pyjamas and generously contributing £1 each to the cause. This collective effort showcased the students' compassion and commitment to making a positive impact. The funds raised will support initiatives to improve the lives of less fortunate children. The event not only highlighted the school's nurturing environment but also demonstrated the power of unity and compassion within Year 5.

 

Year 5 has had a wonderful start to Autumn 2!

The trip to the London Science Museum sparked their interest in our topic:  "What's out there?"  They had lots of fun exploring the Space Exhibition, watching the 3-D film - The Beautiful Planet and testing out different types of forces in the WonderLab.

 

Autumn 1

A very warm welcome to Year 5! We have made a fantastic start to the new academic year after our summer break. The children have settled in very well, and they are already enjoying their new topics for the Autumn term. Our class text at the moment is William Shakespeare's Macbeth, which we are very captivated by!
