Parent Forum
Parent Forum Update – Working Together for Our School Community
This year, we launched our Black Caribbean and Mixed Black/Other Heritage Parent Forum to strengthen communication, listen to lived experiences and work in partnership with families to improve representation, inclusion and belonging across our school. Parent forums included families from Reception to Year 6, alongside our Race & Diversity Lead (Miss Parillon) and external adviser, Louise Brown (Community Engagement Specialist – Ealing).
The discussions have been powerful, honest and solution-focused. We are very grateful to our parents for sharing their voices, experiences and expertise.
What We Have Learned and Worked On Together
Curriculum and Cultural Inclusion
Parents reviewed curriculum plans and suggested ways to better celebrate identity — such as using books like Melanin and embedding natural hair and skin tone awareness. We have begun reviewing representation across year groups and will continue to develop and improve this for the coming Year.
Handling Racist Incidents
Parents helped us review our recording and response processes. Together, we have refined our racist incident procedure, ensuring clearer timelines for communication with families. This will be added to the behaviour policy and shared more widely.
Anti-Racism Education
Parents highlighted the importance of tackling harmful language and embedding anti-racism teaching earlier in children’s education. The school community thoroughly enjoyed taking part on 'Show Racism the Red card Day' on 17th October and as a staff we are reviewing the consistency of anti-racism content in our PSHE curriculum. As a staff, we have repeated training on unconscious bias and adultification - as suggested by parents.
What Happens Next – Our Shared Actions
Together with parents, we have agreed to:
-
Deepen representation across subjects and celebrations, including for Black History Month.
-
Share the updated racist incident procedure on the behaviour policy.
-
Continue to strengthen age-appropriate anti-racism education.
-
Consider increasing cultural awareness activities, including possible themed food days.
Ongoing Collaboration
One of the most important outcomes has been commitment — from both school and families — to ongoing partnership. Parents will continue to meet, supported by a WhatsApp group and a ClassDojo group.
We would like to thank all families who have taken part for their honesty, insight and challenge. Their contributions are already shaping change in our school and will continue to do so.
The Race Equality Parent Forum will continue - we will continue to work together to ensure every child feels represented, valued and able to thrive.
