Year 2
Welcome to Year 2's 2025-26 class page!
Spring
We have had a great start to 2026. The children settled back into their routine after the Christmas Holidays very quickly. They have matured so much and organise themselves and their belongings without adult intervention. They are so keen and eager to learn and have developed a drive to push themselves forward to improve the presentation quality of their work, especially their handwriting. We now take a few minutes to balance and breathe calmly before our daily handwriting lessons.
Through English & History, we have once again transported ourselves back in time, this time to 1854. We have learnt about the inspiring and dedicated nursing of both Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale throughout the Crimean War and the impact they both had on hospitals and nursing, setting the high standards of care and cleanliness we have today. We also studied a fictional text called “Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventures”, listening to a story told by a Flea and a rat!! The children finished this module by writing amazing recounts. They included fantastic vocabulary words like `putrid, chaos, debris, meddling and vividly! `
We had a super Florence Nightingale workshop where the children helped to retell historical events from the Crimean War.
We continue to apply our phonic knowledge and skills as the route to decoding words during our reading sessions and our daily phonic lessons have moved on, as we now have a daily Little Wandle `Bridge to Spelling` lesson covering some of the rules of spelling in the English language, like suffixes and homophones.
In Maths, we’ve been hard at work, learning all about time and applying our table knowledge to counting from 5 & 10 minutes to and from an hour. We also talked about the length of time things take and played an excellent game with our own made spinners. We have been counting in steps of 2 and 5 from 0, and in tens from any number, forward and backward. We have also used multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers in our work.
Our RE work this half-term has taken us `From Galilee to Jerusalem` – this topic has been split into the following: The Preaching of John the Baptist. Jesus is baptised. The Temptation in the Wilderness and Jesus begins to preach. Cure of a paralytic. The choice of the twelve. The calming of the storm. Parable of the lost sheep.
We attended Mass and celebrated Epiphany with the whole school and members of the church community. We continue to increase our knowledge of prayers and say `Our Father` & `Hail Mary` daily.
Pablo Picasso has fascinated us during our art lessons as we explored his creativity through collage, using pastels and crayons and paint. We created self-portraits, colouring them in our own choice of mood interpretation.
Autumn
We have had a busy start to the year. The children settled in so well and so quickly. Their enthusiasm for learning has been inspiring, and they have already shown great interest in our topics.
Through English, history & Art, we transported ourselves back to 1666 and magically transformed into Samuel Pepys, writing diary entries about the dramatic events of the Great Fire of London. The children did a brilliant job imagining what life was like during such an important event in history. We had a super workshop and all the children helped to retell this dramatic historical event.
In maths, we’ve been hard at work learning all about centimetres and metres. With metre sticks in hand, we’ve been measuring everything in sight—doors, bookshelves, and yes, even the teachers! The children are having great fun applying their measuring skills. We have explored fractions and have worked on a whole, half, a third and three quarters.
