    Our Curriculum Explained

The curriculum at Our Lady of the Visitation provides a wide range of learning opportunities to develop knowledge and skills to prepare every child for the next stage in their learning. This is done through a broad and balanced curriculum that offers good quality learning from Emglish and Mathematics to Physical Education and Music.

In 2015 we introduced Maths Mastery. Whilst this is still being embedded we can see the benefits to the pupils' knowledge and understanding of Mathematics through the Explore, Clarify, Practice and Apply approach. Pupils use a wide range of practical resources to gain a clearerunderstanding of maths concepts. In recent maths assessments we can see that our pupils have exceeded pupils nationally in their reasoning skills. We are now putting a greater emphasis on claculations especially mental calculations as we recognsise that our pupils have become more dependent on written calculations.

The introduction of grouping for phonics has had a postiive impact on the pupils' ability to read and write using phonics. 85% of pupils passed the year 1 phonics screening in 2016 compared with 65% in 2014. We use the Letters and sounds scheme to teach phonics. We use a range of reading schemes to teach pupils to read. This includes Oxford Reading tree, Big Cat and Lighthouse. We believe a broad range of resources gives pupils access to a wider breadth of genre, writing styles and content.

We have extensive music and sports opportunities to support and develop pupils educational experiences. Pupils in year 4 and year 5 receive Recorder and African Drumming tutition which also teaches them notation and composition. We also have guitar and keyboard teachers for small group tuition. Please see the Physical Education and Competitions links for further information on sports.
